Default Workspace

Pin a workspace as your default so it opens automatically every time you log in — on every browser, every device.

Default Workspace

If you have access to multiple workspaces — your own organization, client workspaces, the shared demo workspaces — Workestra needs to pick one to open every time you log in.

Without a pinned default, Workestra remembers your last-active workspace per-browser only. That means a fresh login on a different browser, an incognito window, or any workspace where you've cleared site data lands you on the alphabetically-first workspace, which is rarely the one you want.

A pinned default workspace solves this: it follows your account and overrides the per-browser memory.

The default workspace setting is per-user — each member of your organization can pin their own.

How Workestra picks a workspace on login

Workestra walks three layers in order. The first match wins:

  1. Your pinned default workspace — set via the dropdown or the Preferences page.
  2. Last-active workspace in this browser — remembered locally between reloads.
  3. First workspace alphabetically — fallback when nothing else is set.

If you've pinned a default and you switch to a different workspace mid-session, the switch holds for the rest of the session (and across reloads in the same browser). On the next login or in a new browser, Workestra goes back to your pinned default.

The fastest way:

  1. Click your workspace name at the top of the sidebar to open the switcher.
  2. Hover any workspace row — a pin icon appears on the right.
  3. Click the pin to set it as your default.

The pinned workspace shows a filled pin in primary color at all times so you can see at a glance which one is your default.

To remove the pin, click the filled pin icon again.

Pin from Preferences

If you prefer a formal settings control:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Preferences.
  2. The Default workspace card is at the top.
  3. Use the dropdown to pick any workspace you have access to. Workspaces are grouped by Mine, Clients, and Demos.
  4. Click Clear to remove the pin.

The dropdown lists every workspace you're a member of, including the shared demo workspaces.

What the pin doesn't do

  • It doesn't switch your active workspace. Pinning takes effect on the next page reload or login. If you want to switch right now, just click the workspace name in the dropdown.
  • It doesn't change which workspaces appear in the switcher. All your memberships stay listed; the pin only marks one as the entry point.
  • It doesn't affect other team members. Each user has their own pin.

What happens if my pinned workspace becomes unavailable?

Two cases:

  1. The workspace was deleted. Workestra clears the pin automatically — no orphan reference, no "workspace not found" error.
  2. Your access was revoked (you were removed from the workspace, your role was changed, or the workspace was suspended). On your next login, Workestra detects the missing workspace, silently clears the pin, and shows you a one-time toast explaining what happened. The selection falls through to your last-active workspace (or the alphabetically-first if none).

In both cases the recovery is automatic — you just won't see your old default anymore.

Pinning a demo workspace

You can pin any of the three shared Demos as your default. Workestra opens the demo on login the same way it would a real workspace, but writes are blocked at the database level (demos are read-only by design). This is useful when you're using Workestra primarily to evaluate it.

To pin a demo, use the same flow — the demos appear in their own group in both the switcher and the Preferences dropdown.

Common questions

Why does Workestra keep landing me on the wrong workspace when I log in from different browsers?

You haven't pinned a default. Without a pin, Workestra falls back to per-browser memory, which is empty on first login in any new browser. Pin your most-used workspace once and the issue goes away on every browser/device.

Can I have a different default per device?

No — the pin is server-side and follows your user account. If you want a different "first stop" per device, don't pin a default; instead, simply switch to your preferred workspace in each browser. Workestra's per-browser memory will pick up where you left off.

What if I work across multiple workspaces equally?

Don't pin one. Workestra will continue to remember your last-active workspace per browser — that behavior didn't change. Pinning is a feature you opt into when you have a clear "this is my home base" workspace.

Does the pin survive password resets, MFA changes, or signing out?

Yes. The pin is stored on your user account, not in the auth session. Logging out and back in keeps it. Even password resets keep it.

Why doesn't pinning take effect immediately?

Because mid-session changes feel disruptive. The pin is for "where do I want to start" — it kicks in on the next reload or login. If you want to be in the pinned workspace right now, just click it in the switcher to switch normally.
