Goal Cycles

Define quarterly or custom goal cycles, manage carry-forwards, and review completed periods.

Cycles define the time periods for your OKRs — typically quarters (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) or custom periods like fiscal half-years or sprints. All objectives and key results belong to a cycle, and check-ins only open when a cycle is Active.

Creating a Cycle

Go to Goals > Cycles > New Cycle.

FieldDescription
Namee.g., "Q3 2026" or "H1 FY2027"
Start dateWhen the cycle begins
End dateWhen the cycle ends
StatusPlanning, Active, or Closed

Workestra creates Q1–Q4 cycles automatically for the current year on first setup. You can rename them, adjust dates, or delete and recreate them to match your fiscal calendar.

Cycle Statuses

StatusMeaning
PlanningFuture cycle — objectives and KRs can be created but check-ins are not yet enabled
ActiveCurrent cycle — check-ins are enabled and progress is tracked
ClosedPast cycle — read-only; final scores and AI summary are recorded

Only one cycle can be Active at a time. The Active cycle is shown on the Goals Overview dashboard and pre-selected when creating new objectives.

Transitioning to a New Cycle

When you close a cycle and activate the next one, the Transition Wizard walks you through:

  1. Review incomplete KRs — See which key results did not reach their targets
  2. Mark final scores — Set the confirmed final progress percentage for each objective
  3. Select carry-forwards — Choose which incomplete objectives to bring into the new cycle

The wizard prevents accidentally archiving goals without a deliberate decision on each one.

Carry-Forward

Incomplete objectives carried into the next cycle:

  • Are created as new objectives in the incoming cycle, linked back to the original
  • Show a "Carried from [cycle name]" tag on the objective record
  • Start fresh with a reset current value (start value = the carried-forward value at cycle close)
  • Retain their check-in history from the previous cycle for reference

Cycle Review

When closing a cycle, AI generates a cycle-end summary per objective:

  • What was achieved (KRs that hit or exceeded target)
  • What missed (KRs that fell short, with final progress %)
  • Key events during the cycle drawn from connected modules (deals closed, major projects delivered)

The summary is formatted as a narrative suitable for sharing in an all-hands presentation or board update. It's stored permanently on the closed cycle record.

Archive

Closed cycles are archived in Goals > Cycles > Archived. All historical goal data — objectives, KRs, check-ins, AI summaries — is preserved and searchable. Nothing is deleted when a cycle closes.
